When Amena Brown decided to become a spoken word artist, many of her Christian friends assumed it was just a phase. At some point, she would grow up and become a preacher or Bible teacher.

Amena eventually did grow up, but she didn’t change. Instead, she carved out a niche for herself as a leading poet and author, proving that art has a place in spiritual spaces.

I’ve admired her work for years, and I loved her most recent book, “How to Fix a Broken Record: Thoughts on Vinyl Records, Awkward Relationships, and Learning to Be Myself.”

So I decided to chat with her on my “Seekers and Speakers” podcast and let her help us reimagine the word “art.”
